Healing Starts at Home

Family Unification

Incarceration strains families — but it does not have to end them. Reentry Worldwide provides the support, counseling, and guided reconnection services that help returning citizens rebuild the relationships that matter most.

Family Is One of the Strongest Predictors of Successful Reentry

Research is clear: returning citizens who maintain or rebuild strong family connections are significantly more likely to stay out of the criminal justice system, maintain stable employment, and build lasting lives in their communities. Family is not just an emotional anchor — it is a practical one.

But reconnection is rarely simple. Years of separation, broken trust, financial strain, and the emotional weight of incarceration create real barriers between returning citizens and the people they love. Reentry Worldwide's Family Unification program meets residents and their families where they are — and walks with them through the process of healing and rebuilding.

How We Support Family Reconnection

Family Counseling & Mediation

Licensed counselors and trained mediators work with residents and their family members to address the emotional wounds of separation, rebuild communication, and establish a foundation for a healthy relationship going forward.

Parent-Child Reconnection

For residents who were separated from their children, we provide age-appropriate reconnection support — helping parents and children navigate the process of rebuilding their bond in a safe, structured, and loving way.

Couples & Spousal Support

Spouses and partners face unique challenges when a loved one returns from incarceration. We offer couples counseling and individual support for partners to help both people process the experience and move forward together.

Extended Family Engagement

Parents, siblings, and extended family members are often critical to a resident's support network. We help residents reconnect with extended family and help family members understand how to be a positive part of the reentry journey.

Communication Skills & Conflict Resolution

Years apart can mean years of unlearned communication habits. We provide practical tools for healthy communication, conflict de-escalation, and boundary-setting so families can navigate disagreements without fracturing the relationship.

Ongoing Family Support Planning

Family reconnection is not a one-time event — it is an ongoing process. Each resident's reentry plan includes a family support component that evolves as relationships grow and circumstances change.

The Reconnection Process

01

Family Assessment

Your case manager conducts a family assessment to understand your relationships, identify who is part of your support network, and surface any specific challenges or sensitivities that need to be addressed before reconnection begins.

02

Guided First Contact

For residents who have been out of contact with family members, we facilitate guided first contact — helping both sides prepare for the conversation and ensuring it happens in a supported, constructive environment.

03

Counseling & Mediation Sessions

Residents and family members participate in counseling or mediation sessions designed to process the past, establish new expectations, and build the communication skills needed for a healthy relationship.

04

Family Support Integration

Family reconnection is woven into the resident's broader reentry plan — coordinated with housing, employment, and case management so that family support reinforces every other aspect of the resident's progress.

"When a person comes home and their family is there — really there — everything changes. The motivation is different. The stakes are different. We do everything we can to make that homecoming possible."

— George Nelson, Founder & Executive Director
